Then, over the weekend, I heard “In Ruins” on Sirius. Thought, hmm, this is interesting. Get to work Monday and I see there is an ”In Ruins” EP, containing the original tracks along with 4 remixes, being offered for free at Asthmatic Kitty. One of them was done by Baths whose track “Maximalist” I have been playing a LOT lately. Also there is one by Keepaway who I interviewed earlier this year (and also wrote about). Color me interested. The Karin Tatoyan <del datetime="2010-04-29T21:48:54+00:00">remix</del> cover is really awesome, very different than the rest in that it focuses the attention on the vocals which end up sounding really great with the music stripped away.

Tune in every Saturday night 9-10:30 MST to catch me spinning (digitally) the latest and greatest…

This week I interviewed Frank from one of my favorite new bands: Keepaway.

While he wouldn’t say which label, Frank did mention that the band was this close to signing with a label we’d all be familiar with. Specifically we were talking about Toro Y Moi, Memory Tapes and other Chillwave artists when he said “Based on the bands we’ve been talking about I think you’ll know them (the label).”

You can listen to a replay of the show whenever you would like for the next two weeks right here.

If you will be at SXSW and want to set up an interview for broadcast on UtahFM and this site please contact me.

LivingEars Limelight is a new column I am writing for SLC’s weekly paper, In This Week. The idea is that I write about my single favorite song I heard this week.

This first one is a couple of weeks old now since it took a few weeks to get it printed but it will hit stands on the 18th.

“Yellow Wings” by Keepaway

“I think I finally know what I want/I want to be two places at once/I wanna stretch until I split; fall back graciously into the room.” The first great song from a relative unknown band this year comes straight outta Brooklyn via three piece Keepaway. “Yellow Wings” follows the well laid tradition of songs about wanting to improve your place in life. The difference here is that life is so good for ebullient singer Nick Nauman that he wants to be able to enjoy it from two different places. Lifting off from an African-like chant and pounding kick drum the track unfolds layer by layer into a gorgeous rhythm of well chosen percussion and sparse but deep guitar notes. The real beauty here comes from the refrain which carries the song –again and again– to exultant heights.

Mixes well with » Yeasayer, Modest Mouse, Animal Collective

Keepaway – Yellow Wings
