I don’t know if I’m just completely susceptible to this syrupy slice of faux-emotional depth or if there really is something almost tragic about this take on a pure pop dance-floor disco jam?

Is it totally empty? Sensationalist?

I love it.

Yesterday there was a bogus Salem track floating around the net and all that disappointment led me to post this mix which I first came across via Jack’s twitter account. Not sure why it hasn’t been picked up anywhere but if you like some of those super stretched out sounds like you found on previous mix “I BURIED MY HEART INNA WOUNDED KNEE,” then this baby is for you. I love the drone around the 10 min mark and the then the vocals about death are really nice and uplifting as well.

Either way, I better embed this video since I’m blogging abt him.

Not many nice things have been said in the press regarding Salem’s live performance. But apparently that is changing. With a positive review in the Times, positive twitter buzz, positive HRO coverage it looks as though things are turning up sunshine for these Rape Gaze masterminds.

From the video it looks as though John has finally let his hair down (and shaved it!) and is getting his swagger on behind the synth. I saw a picture of Heather sitting on the ground, typically blasé about the whole thing and Jack; well Jack was the only one gettin funky at those SXSW shows of yore so I’m glad he’s still at it.

Lots of triggered vocals, slowed down of course… still on the hip hop side of things after that These New Puritans remix (which I still like quite a lot).

Fresh off the decks is a new mix from night crawler trio Salem. Perhaps the first chopped and screwed mix featuring rave hits?? I found this over at Dis Magazine. There is no tracklist, drop the names of the tracks you recognize in the comments… The second track is “Better Off Alone” by Alice DJ. The last track is “Forever Young” and is definitely the highlight. A classic brought to a syrupy speed…

Salem – DIS RAVER STAY WIF ME

The Guardian recently published an article called “Scene and heard: Drag.” They get into the emergence of artists such as Balam Acab, Salem, oOoOO and the short history of chopped and screwed, syrupy slow hip hop and what it has morphed into in a short amount of time.

This is one of my favorite things happening in music right now. You’ve seen many of these songs and this type of music here for quite some time.
