Not sure this helps anyone’s image of New Jersey but it does reaffirm some of what I thought were stereotypes… lots of bros, baseball caps and a general lack of fashion sense.
Maybe all those reality shows had it right?

VIDEO OF THE YEAR
It’s kind of wild to think about how much time goes into making a video like this when it will really only be watched by probably 1,000-5,000 fans. Chalk that up to few media outlets still playing videos and our cultural obsession with the latest (anything 3 days old is actually considered old nowadays). This is a really great track that totally stands up on its own but the video provides even more depth to this balance of dark and light.
Oddly there seem to be a few versions of this video floating around. Today there was a version that was 2:56 in length but here is an extended version released mid-June. The band released a visual accompaniment to the album and for whatever reason an edited version of that release is being associated with the track. This is the full version, same length as the album version.
Here is a new, old video for one of the more promising of the recent drag/witch house (or should it be häus?) upstarts White Ring. This video uses scenes from Stanley Kubrick’s “Lolita.” I’m actually reading Lolita right now.

White Ring – IxC999
One of my favorite songs from 2k9 gets the video treatment. Spooky!
CARIBOU – Sun from Caribou on Vimeo.
My favorite thing about this song is that my mother turned me onto it. Thanks mom.
:papercutz – Lylac (Helios Remix) from :papercutz on Vimeo.
I had never heard of :papercutz before but stumbled upon this via @lizzyville on twitter. She manages a great site and was giving this vid a nod so here we are. First things first, the song is really great. Add the gorgeous, lush images which come courtesy of Japanese animation star Daihei Shibataof and you get what I believe is supposed to represent the beginning of life –heady stuff– and you also get a great piece of art. <via>
These are some videos I shot of the live Salt Lake City debut of Girls.
Before the actual show the band did an in-store at Slowtrain Records These videos are from that.
These are from the actual show at Urban Lounge later that evening:
Before launching into “Lust for Life” the band began with “All I Have to do is Dream,” a song most know as an Everly Brothers original though it was actually written by husband wife duo Felice and Boudleaux Bryant (according to the all knowing wikipedia).
“Carolina” was a personal highlight as back in 2008 when “Hellhole Ratrace” was on constant repeat there was only another song or two from Girls available in any form. The band had only had a handful of performances and youtube clips were difficult to come by. Even now it looks like the only version of “Carolina” on YouTube was from the 2008 Midi Fest. This is the same video I was jamming to way back then. I’m excited to have another version to share. I’m not sure if they’ve been playing this one every night on tour or not but it’s definitely worth sticking around for the encore. I hope this ends up being released as a b-side on an upcoming single.
Then after the show I whipped out my Flipcam and asked The Magic Kids a hard hitting question or two. **UPDATE 02/16/10** Apparently Bennet is not a fan of this video and wishes to rescind his comments and appearance. He just called and asked I take it down. “I don’t want my grandma to see it and she’s way more computer literate than I am.” He has agreed to do another interview, maybe down in Austin a few weeks from now. It’s tough to be in a band when you’re worried about your grandma but hey, removing it seems like the right thing to do.
